Book Review: The Fourth Wing Worth the Hype?

So, I Finally Read Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (book review)

GENRE: Adult Fantasy Romance

LENGTH: 498 pages

I finally read it

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros was finally read, even though it took me months to get the book. I finished it in about five days, with a full reading day. I could have finished it faster if I had started it on Friday.

I was hooked. The first few chapters were a little hesitant because I’m not a fan of first-person fantasy novels, but it didn’t take long for me to be sucked into the story.

This book gets a generous rating of 4.75/5.

My Thoughts

The plot and dialogue were two factors that prevented me from giving this book five stars.

I know I’m going to sound harsh but, as an experienced fantasy and dystopian book reader, I feel I need to do some pre-recs to review this book accurately.

Plot

This book is a rip-off of Divergent’s Divergent.

Before I started the series, all I knew was that the story revolved around dragons. The similarities between the two chapters were obvious from the very first chapter.

It’s not that I don’t think authors are inspired by other books, but with fantasy becoming more popular it’s hard to find series with an original plot. A Taste of Gold and Iron was a great book. The plot was new, and it didn’t seem like I had read the book before.

The Fourth Wing found many similarities between the two books. Some scenes were even almost identical. I won’t give away any details, but the two main connections are Violet’s friends Rhiannon, and Ridoc and the boy rider who was always trying to kill Violet. Jack Barlowe was too similar to Peter.

Let’s not talk about Xaden, her higher power. Ring any bells, then? Cough, cough four?

This plot had many unique elements, such as the bond between the rider and dragons or the history. I don’t think Yarros wrote a bad plot. But I thought she could have done more to stray from Divergent.

Dialogue

Okay. I’m sorry if I sound pretentious, but the dialogue in this book was so unrealistic and cringe-worthy. No matter how outdated and white-centric this teaching method may be, it is still important sometimes.

Violet and her love interest would wax poetic about one another in their minds, and I would internally scream. We know that they are in love, Rebecca. You don’t have to tell us everything in every paragraph.

The basic dialogue between the characters was also immature. I wasn’t impressed by Yarro’s work.

I’m sorry if I sound like an idiot, but the writing was very poor.

All the things I did like

Before you call me a hater and a trolling, I will admit that I did love a few things.

Dragons!

The world of the Four Wing book revolves around dragons and their riders. Our main character spends her first year as a Rider Quadrant student, learning how to be a rider while trying to bond with a dragon. The dragons were my favorite part. Her characters helped to illustrate the world-building that revolved around dragons. This book made me want to read other dragon fantasy novels.

I was surprised by the uniqueness of the dragons, even though the plotline was similar to Divergent. Dragons have a lot of history and it is clear that Yarros incorporated her research into her story.

Plot Elements

The plot had some elements that I enjoyed. The school setting was great. I find it difficult to read books that are written by people younger than I am, so I no longer enjoy books set in school. These characters were all college-aged so I liked the setting and age.

The story takes place in Bagsiath War College. It is also a military-based world, and that is cool. It was reminiscent of legend, but in a subtle manner.

Even though I had predicted the outcome, I still loved it. I will only mention that this is the end of Red Queen. I’ll leave it to Yarros. It was the second last chapter that I didn’t expect.

The plot was good, but I also enjoyed these particular aspects.

The Romance…

If you don’t already know, I preferences over lovers. It’s probably because I like slow burn, and the best slow burn is angsty with lots of tension.

I was hooked! I won’t spoil the romance, but I will tell you that he is a very hot and sexy guy.

FINAL THOUGHTS Fourth Wing Book

I’m glad I finally read this book because I felt like I was one of the few people who had done so. The hype surrounding it was INSANE. The opinions I heard were all hyperbolic, and I believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Is this a new kind of fantasy? It’s definitely not. Is this a book that’s full of dragons, romance, and fun? Yes.
